Helping Ourselves
Overall look at several Pathwork concepts which have been covered in detail previously. How tools such as Daily Review, Vicious Circle, finding dualisitic thought patterns and noticing personalty types and preferences can bring more awareness to issues that we are dealing with and allow for a deeper and fuller understanding. Simple everyday experiences may reveal attitudes and thought patterns that we have not been aware of.

The Observer Self: Chapter 3 of Undefended Self
One of the most important tools for self-transformation is awareness. Distortion, false beliefs and negativity usually result in pain and disharmony.  If we blame ourselves, fear that we are inadequate, or label our imperfections as bad or evil we can lose the best witness we have -- our own inner knowing. Feedback from others may contain distortion or feel threatening, causing us to raise our defense instead of opening to the grain of truth in what they offer. A strong inner Observer Self can support our process with love.
The goal in developing an inner Observer Self is to awaken the inner teacher/healer who is ever-present and ready to guide us, using the tools of objectivity and detachment with love and compassion. How can we discern the energy of the Observer Self as distinct from the Ego or other inner voices? The ability to observe ourselves objectively and compassionately is the single most important skill to develop in walking the spiritual path.

Pgl 44: The Forces of Love, Eros and Sex What turns you on? The Pathwork Guide speaks of three key aspects of relationship and spiritual development: Love, as a permanent state of the Soul; Eros, as one of the most potent forces in the universe; and Sex, as the creative force on all levels of existence.

Pgl 182: Meditation for Three Voices,  referencing Child, Adult Ego and Soul Self, Chapter 4 of The Undefended Self by Susan Thesenga. Encouraging greater consciousness around different aspects of ourselves can be likened to the process of Voice Dialogue©. It is often taught using three chairs or seating positions, and the process can be expanded to include many other combinations, such as Higher Self, Lower Self and Mask (Pgl 14) or Reason, Will and Emotion (Pgl 43).

Pgl 134: Facing the Lower Self,  referencing Chapter 7 of The Undefended Self by Susan Thesenga. A synthesis of many Pathwork lectures on the Lower Self, negativity, and and transformation. Lecture references include Lower Self, Higher Self, and Mask (pgl 14); Pride, Self-Will and Fear (pgl 30); The Concept of Evil (pgl 134); and The Meaning of Evil and its Transcendence (pgl 184).

Pgl 207: The Spiritual Significance of Sexuality
"The sexual force is an expression of consciousness reaching for fusion. " yet in addition "The movement toward fusion on the emotional level must be expressed in feeling- exchange if the fusion is to take place. ... Mental fusion exists obviously on the level of the thinking mind. ... Spiritual fusion is always a natural result of the fusion on the physical, emotional, and mental levels." “For most human beings it is still inconceivable to combine sexuality with spirituality. This concept is bound to change soon. Satisfying relationships with others are therefore always also a mirror of the degree of inner unification for the individual. If you cannot find union with others, you are in disunity within yourself.”

Pgl 46: Authority
An invitation to examine your relationship to authority. This requires some spiritual maturity, such as developing the Observer Self and believing in one’s Higher Self. Otherwise, you might only be able to see your reactions to authority, which can often be justified or rationalized. Ask yourself: am I willing to honestly see the truth about my relationship to authority? If there is any hesitation in your response, do not suppress it. Allow it as part of the truth about yourself. See if you can include these feelings, and allow any resistance to contribute to your self-knowing.

Pgl 196: Commitment, Cause and Effect
“When you can truly see cause and effect relationships in your life, not only will you be motivated to want to give up negative attitudes and intentions and to institute positive intentionality, you will also gain awareness and emotional and spiritual maturity. Maturity is to a great extent the ability to put cause and effect together. The ability to put cause and effect together also indicates the degree of awareness an entity has reached through his development.” Pgl 196 Pathwork reaches beyond psychotherapy, ‘common sense’, and logic. It asks us to consider looking for (and then recognizing) patterns which may indicate a deeper connection between our intentions and what happens in our lives than we have been aware of. When we ignore or misrepresent the connection between cause and effect, we disempower ourselves. Consequences appear random and inexplicable, encouraging despair and self-doubt.

Pgl 204: What is the Path? Giving Up Illusions
“This is basically the Pathwork.  Unless you give up these illusions and take stock of whatever is in you, you must remain alienated from your own spiritual essence” The actual title of this lecture is What is the Path, and the answers it suggests can seem deceptively easy to understand.  Yet the day to day work of giving up illusions is the hardest work we do.
